We live in such a technological advanced society within 2020 that advertising just cant be avoided as it is everywhere we look. Our world is engulfed with ads for services, products, people or even sports teams, whether that be on the sides of buildings, television or on youtube. Social media isn't immune to adverts, for example Instagram is guilty for the depiction of hundreds of ads for thousands of different companies everyday presented to the billions of users on the app. It is probably the easiest use of advertisements due to the amount of celebrity endorsements seen within the app on their profiles for example, the Kardashians collaboration with Sugar Bear Hair Gummies persuading young fans to view this ad and maybe buy the product.
Though adverts are a good way of showing off a certain product or service, when is it considered over the top? With YouTube introducing the ‘skip’ button after 5 seconds of viewing the ad, we are all virtually waiting for these dreaded 5 seconds to be up. The 5 seconds that almost feel like a lifetime. Does this not show we are all sick of seeing this many adverts? Is this button not a clear indication that adverts are just a time killer? I don't think anyone sits there and watches the whole advert, they just want to watch the video they clicked on. In addition are advert not just telling us how to live our lives? For example throughout summer, as a pending year 12 student i was unaware what my next step in life was but hearing what college i should go to in the radio or on posters throughout town, it really does but a downer on things as it no longer feels like a choice for me.
