The game I have chosen to research is Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. The game was released on October 29th, 2013.

The story is set in the 18th century and follows Welsh pirate Edward Kenway. What makes this game stand out from the others in the franchise is that it was taken from the land into the ocean, with the main character being a pirate.

Production

The total amount has not been disclosed by Ubisoft, but the game's budget is estimated to be $100 million. Speaking of Ubisoft, this game was created by them. They have made many franchises in the past, such as Watch Dogs, Just Dance and Far Cry. A whopping 900+ people worked on the game.

The story of the game reflects the audience's need for something new in the games industry, as the past few games had all been quite similar to each other.

The game was received well by critics and fans alike, many casual reviewers giving high scores. As well as this, IGN gave the game an 8.5/10, EuroGamer gave it a 9/10, and GamesRadar gave it a 4.5/10, all of which being near perfect scores.

This reviewer has taken an oppositional reading to the game, as although the open world element was praised by many, this person felt as if the scale was much too big to be any good.

However, it seems that this reviewer has taken the preferred reading by praising the 'sense of scope' and the setting of the game that many other reviewers before them have also praised.
