Attitude Representations Ethnicity

Attitudes online media does not have a lot of representation of ethnicity's, over-representing white people. However this article is an example of the good representation that Attitude puts out. For example the article is celebrating Ncuti Gatwa being the first black and openly gay Doctor Who, acknowledging its significance claiming he has 'made history'. This representation celebrates diversity in a show that has been under-representing black main characters for years, and the white dominated brand of Doctor Who.

Another example of ethnicity representation is an article with actor Colman Domingo and celebrating how he is ' the second ever Black actor to be nominated in the category two consecutive years, after Denzel Washington.' highlighting the historical context both his success in a white-dominated industry and the academy awards under representation of black actors. In addition to this Attitude states he has 'made history' as the first black out gay man to be nominated for best actor, again highlighting the under representation of black gay men in the industry. Domingo also says himself that none of his success was handed to him, which could be taken as a reading that he is criticizing the industry and its nepotism which is predominantly white.

However, these articles combined depict that the bigger industries only recognizes the big successes of black gay male celebrities, and under represents black gay women in places such as award shows which suggests different representations between men and women

On the other hand this article with Martin Pong challenges representations of ethnicity in the industry '“How many A-list queer people of colour you can name? How about queer East or South East Asian people that look like me? My guess is not many. This shows just how under-represented queer people of colour are in the media.' he claims that the hegemonic representation of white gay people makes any gay people of colour 'invisible' creating ideas of being powerless and not having a voice in the LGBTQ community. This also leads to harmful stereotypes of gay people, ignoring people of colour and therefore leaving people feeling under represented and unable to identify with anyone in the media and therefore not being seen
