Austerity Britain

The UK began its austerity measures in late 2010 due to the global recession. most banks were in heavy debt at the time and had to keep borrowing money from the government in a vicious cycle to repay their debts, leading to the labour government which people blamed for their financial woes being ousted by a conservative and liberal democrat coalition, led by prime minister David Cameron. Eventually he appointed his old friend George Osborne as Chancellor of the Exchequer

Osborne out of desperation decided as chancellor he would impose austerity measures cutting the funding for the public sector such as school's public services such as the police. another controversial cut was to the uk's flood prevention system which made towns and villages in places like the Lake District and the Yorkshire moors practically unlivable for some

The aim of all these cuts were to decrease budget deficits which how much the government spends compared to how much tax and revenue it collects. People hated austerity as it meant people were being paid less for longer hours and then having more of the smaller wage people were earning be cut even more by things like council tax. This led to poorer people getting poorer and because George Osborne decided to mainly tax the public sector rather than the big corporate conglomerates that caused the recession in the first place
