BFI is the lead organisation for film in the UK and use funding from the national lottery to support film production, distribution education and audience development. They started the institution in 1933. The BFI aims to promote and preserve independent filmmaking and television. One of the first film production that they funded was Billy Elliot produced by Stephen Daldry. They produced I, Daniel Blake which was released in 2016 and was a social realism movie. The BFI has a very close working relationship with the national lottery as they are trusted with their funding because they trust that they can choose the right movies to produce and release.
