Cliche From The Black Lagoon

Creature from the black lagoon is a 1954 horror film from universal which is riddled with what you would expect from 1950s horror film, this includes a very cliche poster!

it shows our monster grabbing hold of a woman who seems to be powerless in the situation screaming for her life waiting for her saviour to arrive, this saviour/saviours seem to be the two divers in the background.

There are hundreds of posters like this making it nothing special but at the same time it is as if they are trying to suggest this is not a horror film as there are no key signifiers to suggest what genre this takes place in, the bright greens and blues do not exactly scream horror and the creature could be ripped straight from sci-fi movie, only from what we know of horror posters alone, such as the much used monster and damsel in distress, could we deduct that this a horror film.

as far as representations go this poster is interesting as although we can assume the genders of the creature and divers is male there is no confirmation of this on the poster, meaning there is an equal ratio of two women and two men in this poster, with one of the women and two of the men being at the bottom portion of the the poster and one of the women being front and centre of the poster. This could represent that women do have a vital role to this movie yet they are still the damsels in distress and this is true for both females as even the woman at the bottom of the poster is clinging onto the man as if she is in need of protecting.
