Film review: Pokemon The Arceus Chronicles

*spoilers ahead*

Pokemon The Arceus Chronicles is a relatively short film made in the typical pokemon anime style surrounding the Legends Arceus game recently made for the nintendo switch in January of this year. This film takes us back to an era before the current games based in sinnoh, the region featured in the generation 4 games diamond, pearl and platinum. However, it is a recreation as stated in the beginning.

In the first shot we see a coffee coloured picture of many pokemon until it transitions quickly into colour after these flying pokemon travel close up to the viewer. After this barrage of flying pokemon, we then get the credits to the people who made this film possible shown whilst we get close up shots of pokemon who live deep underwater. Personally, this portrays the film as having a wholesome and joyful feel to it until they suddenly contrast the jovial pokemon and calming voice with an imposing portal. This portal then gets a close up shot with a slow, ominous panning shot moving upwards to show the menacing yet majestic figure of the mythical pokemon Arceus itself. Furthermore, we get the name of the movie splashed on the screen after Arceus moves out of the way thus ending the prologue of the film. From now on, this review will be about the film as a whole.

Now that I have watched this film in it's entirety I can say it has used many of Barthes's codes successfully most dominantly the use of enigma codes is blatant from the very start. The words enigmatic and powerful perfectly describe this film. Style is obvious in this film as the art style is unique and charming plus helping the viewer get attached to the characters, of which there is not many used which in my opinion greatly enhances the connection between viewer and character.

My personal favourite character is Cynthia, the champion of the Sinnoh region, as she was portrayed using many action codes and shots that show her presence as beautiful yet extremely threatening to her enemies, in this case team galactic. One scene showing her powerful aura was when Goh was completely covered in a shot by just her hair presenting him as no longer necessary in the shot.
