Forbidden Planet Poster.

Forbidden Planet is a classic Sci-fi film from 1956 directed by Fred M. Wilcox. Where a space crew discovers an unknown planet, only to find it homes a powerful robot.

The style of the poster was very common in 50s/60s monster movies, we can quite see the main 'threat' or 'monster' that film revolves around, center stage in the poster. This is very similar to many other monster movies that came out during the time, such as Creature from The Black Lagoon, where we can see the main creature typically holding a woman in quite revealing clothing. The woman in these posters is normally always under threat of these monsters, and they're never staged to be heroic, their body is normally in another person's arms. Whether that be the creatures, that heroic male protagonist has to save her from or in the male protagonist arm, to protect her. However the poster is framed, the woman never seems to be heroic or in charge or even brave, they get facial expressions of fear. This goes with the stereotype of that era, that woman need their 'white knight' to save them, thus creating a fantasy for men, which this movie is marketing for. Woman at that time were seen as helpless, they were never the hero of the stories as a majority of men didn't view them that way, there was always a power dynamic painted both in films and in society, where men are above them, always in charge and always the hero, and woman where the ones who needed saving as they can't be independent without men.
