Formation, Beyonce & Her Changing Identity

From Single Ladies to Run the World, Beyonce's music has often been about empowering women. Formation is no different and this is clear to see in the all-female dance troupe shown through a high angle shot, is accompanying Beyonce during the repetitive line, 'ladies, now lets get in formation'. This represents girl power, something that she has always made very clear in her songs. This creates the persona of a strong, independent woman.


However, the majority of the lyrics in Formation are references to Beyonce's heritage- something that has never really been a big part of her music, until now. One of the main lyrics, 'My daddy Alabama, momma Louisiana', shows a big statement about how she is proud of where she comes from. The way in which Beyonce wears her hair in the car park scene shows significance as it is shown to be in it's natural state, following controversy
