Its Christmas!

Christmas ads. John lewis christmas ads. It isn't christmas without a john lewis christmas ad. It has recently become somewhat of a tradition which has taken over the UK during the holidays. Every year, we wait to enjoy, but mostly judge on twitter, the heart warming christmas advert. Some years the advert is successful, others it doesn't go down too well. The past few years, the famous John Lewis advert has definitely been far from dazzling. Though for me, one stands out. The 2015 advert entitled Man on the Moon. the advert is about a young girl who tries to help an elderly man stranded on the moon with christmas spirit. John lewis teamed up with Age UK to bring us this heartfelt advertisement exploring the issues of isolation, loneliness and forgetting loved ones.

The advert connects Christmas sentiment with support for Age UK. The Christmas advert tells the story of a little girl, Lily (six year old Orli), who discovers through her telescope a man living alone on the Moon (77-year-old French stage actor Jean). At its heart the narrative demonstrates the power of connection and thoughtfulness at Christmas – a time of great joy, but also a time when some might find themselves alone. The advert ends with the strapline “Show someone they’re loved this Christmas”. The John Lewis ads is set to the Oasis track ‘Half The World Away’, recorded by 19-year-old Norwegian music star, Aurora Aksnes. Unlike most ads, john lewis dont use theirs to directly sell anything more as an emotional build up persuading viewers to donate to the cause that has collabed that year. The song used within the advert will trigger memories for the viewers as it has been used in well known british comedic TV series such as Royal Family. The original song is played on guitar and has a slow tempo as if Oasis is telling us a story, though in the advert it is played on a piano to pull on the audiences heart strings. It is also sung by Aurora Aksnes and not oasis. Her angelic voice acts as a relaxation method for the advert viewers, once again affecting them on a deeper level.
