This advertisement from PepsiCo was released it April of 2017 and features model, Kendall Jenner. The advert represents a wide variety of of diversity, featuring people of multiple genders, ethnicity and sexualities. The advertisement, which debuted during the 2017
Superbowl, follows a street protest against policemen. Although there is no clear motive for the protest, Kendall, who is taking part in a photoshoot, decides to join in. She presents one of the policemen with a can of Pepsi, this seems to result in the end to the protest and victory for the people.
Considering that Pepsi is such a large company, the intended audience for this advert is very large and broad. In reference to the Young and Rubicams 4Cs model, the ad appeals to the Mainstreamers audience. Pepsi is a trustworthy product and, similar to its largest rival Coca-cola, it has been an established brand for a very long time. Moreover, the advert appeals to the Reformer, too. This is because the ad is promoting change and standing up for what is right in society. The advert also suggests that there is a simple solution to avoid further upset, in this case the can of Pepsi.
The advert received immense backlash with people complaining that it over simplified the resolution to serious protests, and mocked the hard work that protesters go through to fight for their causes. Moreover in terms of audiences, it could be said that this advert appeals to an individual's need to dominate. People who feel strongly about expressing their opinions may identify with this ad, also depending on how familiar people are with the infamous protests in which the ad may or may not be parodying, will impact how they receive that advertisement. Black Mirror is a British science fiction anthology television series created by Charlie Brooker in 2011. It often makes the audience think, wonder and imagine living life in a completely different way and was purchased by Netflix in 2015.
The series was originally broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 and gained prominence and popularity for its standalone dramas, usually set in an alternative time or the near future. Episodes often have a dark and satirical tone, however some are more experimental and lighter.
The series has received very positive reviews by international viewers and its individual episodes have received several awards and nominations including episodes "USS Callister" and "San Junipero", both winning the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie.
Moreover, Black Mirror would appeal to the Explorers audience and fits perfectly with their description. It provides it audience with an alternative experience, something that challenges the normal conventions.
The viewers of Black Mirror need to enjoy a thrill as the series is known for its slightly frightening and psychologically thought provoking plot lines. Its twists and unexpected turns make it suitable to audiences who want to be surprised and shocked. However it is also a show that is growing in popularity and has millions of viewers per episode. Therefore the show if becoming more mainstream and may begin to appeal to the Mainstreamer and Aspirers audiences.
Moreover, the plot lines that take place in Black Mirror are usually very extravagant and unrealistic. Therefore, the show allows viewers to escape from real life and, for an hour or so, experience something that otherwise they would not be able to.
