Kingsman: The Secret Service - Review

Kingsman: The Secret Service is an spy/action/comedy movie released by 20th Century Fox in 2015. It had a budget of $81–94 million and gained a box office revenue of £400 million. The film stars a collection of well-known actors including Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Samuel Jackson and Michael Caine, as well as Liverpool-born actor, Taron Egerton. It is a much more lighthearted take on the James Bond franchise, full of action and famous faces however the almost cliche special effects and modern soundtrack, set it apart from the more serious spy thrillers. Since its release, there has since been a sequel to the movie, Kingsman: Golden Circle, released in 2017.

The film opens with a sequence from a 1997 Middle East mission, were an agent is brutally murdered. A fellow agent involved, Harry Hart, played by Firth, provides the late agents widow and son a medal, engraved with an emergency assistance number. The films follows the life of the son, "Eggsy", played by Egerton, a stereo typical "chav" from London who, after getting caught up with the law, calls the number on the medal and begins his journey to become a part of Kingman, a private intelligence service founded by wealthy British individuals who lost their heirs in World War I.

Moreover, the 129 minute long film consists of Eggsy completing tasks and challenges to become a prestigious Kingman, and helping to battle Richmond Valentine, the millionaire antagonist played by Samuel Jackson. Valentine has plans to illuminate global warming, one person at a time, by killing members of the international public via a free mobile sim card which he releases. Full of fast-paced action, yet sprinkled with many comedic elements which set it apart from your typical spy movie, the film offers a modern take on the action genre. Samuel Jackson offers constant laughs throughout the film, as does the lead, Egerton. Furthermore, Colin Firth intensifies an already very British movie with his incredible acting ability as well as his classic presence.

The movie was directed, produced and co-written by Matthew Vaughn, known for Kick-Ass (2010) and X-Men (2011). Vaughn's previous endeavours clearly have a large effect on his projects as, although differing in storyline, Kingsman shows similar humour and overall vibes as the Kick-Ass franchise.

In my opinion, this movie is a lighthearted action comedy with brilliant acting and amazing cinematography. The plot is thick and has good direction and the movie, in my opinion, has little to no boring moments, keeping audiences captivated throughout. The overall production of the film is to a very high standard, as to be expected from 20th Century Fox, and the movie offers viewing versatility suitable for a family movie night or a friend outing to the cinema.
