Life Changer - Lana Del Rey "Born To Die"

Updated: Nov 5

The album "Born To Die" by Lana Del Rey was released on January 27th 2012 . It was Lana's debut album after her viral hit "video games". The album was the worlds fifth best selling album of 2012 , and then in 2023 it remains popular within the charts. Becoming the second album by a woman to spend more than 500 weeks on the US billboard 200 , where it peaked at number two.

The album attracted controversy by a lot of critics for its controversial lyricism , and its approach to a new sound . However a larger quantity of critics praised the albums distinctive sound . With lots of different opinions and controversy it still remained its popularity.

The Grammy awards gave the album the title of "the most influential album in the past decade" .they further explained how the sound and aesthetic of Born To Die created a blueprint for numerous artists and cultural movements during the 2010s - and beyond.

I stumbled across the album at a younger age in teenage years , which enticed me enough to listen to her whole discography . Years later I still remain to listen to this album and the rest of her discography almost daily , with this album finding its way into my Spotify wrapped yearly. As a personal statement I would describe Lana music , specifically this album songs you could manipulative daydream your own movie too in your head , and that's my favourite aspect of it. I also appreciate the instruments alone are so cinematic that they could be enjoyed separately , so Lana's angelic voice is just additional to the atmosphere. I also play it often play on vinyl where you can appreciate details of the album a lot clearer.

My favourite song from this album is most likely the 9th track "Carmen" .The song illustrates subtly a 17 year old protagonist who suffers from substance abuse. Del Rey admitted in 2012 that she had a past with alcoholism struggles when she was a teenager , it is speculated carmen is a metaphor for herself .My favourite part of the song specifically is after the bridge follows a long French interlude , which radiates a angelic atmosphere and makes the song complete in my opinion.

I would recommend this album to individuals who like to daydream while listening to music , and the type of people who take into consideration the small details in a song and concentrate on instruments . As each track of the album tunes into very different sounds , instruments and melodies .
