Little Women film review

Little Women (2019)- Greta Gerwig

This adaption of Little Women is both based off of the novel by Louisa May Alcott and the original movie version, which was released in 1949. The movie is set during the Civil War and displays the relationships between 4 siblings and how they develop over time.

In my opinion, the integral relationship in the movie is between sisters Jo and Amy March. Their relationship is presented as a relatable and competitive sibling rivalry, which makes the overall plot of the film more fast-paced and excitable. For example, when my burns Jo's story that she had been writing, out of anger. This causes Jo to 'hate' Amy, until the next day when Amy falls into the river ice skating and Jo feels immense guilt, as Amy could have died feeling her hate, instead of love. However, extremely quickly the pair find something else to compete over (Laurie.) This is almost humours to the audience, who can relate to similar situations in their own families.

At the same time, the movie has a homely, comforting feel, as when one of the sisters (Beth) dies all of the siblings, their father (who has been fighting in the war) and their mother all come back together to grieve their loss, showing that family is extremely important and creating an emotional reaction from audiences who may have also lost somebody that they love. This semantic feeling is often found in Greta Gerwig movies, for example in Ladybird, when at the end of the movie Christine calls her mother and thanks her for everything she did for her growing up.

In conclusion, I think that Little Women is a movie that everybody should watch at least once in their life, as it helps develop empathy and makes people more aware of the people around them and how important it is to look out for those we love, before it is too late.
