Magazine Research- Elle

Text 1: British Elle Magazine Front Cover

Elle Magazine is a long running, worldwide, women’s magazine that offers a mix of fashion and beauty content, and society and lifestyle. The title “Elle” means “she” in French and is considered one of the world’s largest fashion and lifestyle publications to date. Elle has 45 international publications with over 33 million readers and 100 million monthly readers. The magazine as a whole target a more mainstream audience from Young & Rubicam’s 4Cs model because of the brands popular name and content that is published. It can also link to the aspirer from the 4Cs model as the people who tend to interact with the magazine are people whose core motivation is status, and they respond to other people’s views on appearance, personality and fashion.

UK-Magazine front cover

The covers of Elle magazine are usually similar in their layout and overall look. With a coloured background with the masthead at the top of the page. A women framed in a medium shot typically emphasising her make-up, style, fashion, etc. The model is in the middle of the page surrounded by coverlines which fill up the page normally giving lifestyle tips, intriguing facts about the celebrity on the cover, and what is it to be featured inside the magazine. Although, it can look like there is a lot of writing on the page, the cover has a clean, minimalistic feel. The cover lines are there to entice the reader which, in this magazine, is directed to a more female audience. The masthead of the cover ‘Elle’ is positioned at the top of the page and Pugh’s hands even cut of a bit of the masthead. This is done a lot with well know, iconic magazines as they are recognisable enough even without seeing the whole name.

This edition from October 2023 is sticking with the feel of the magazine by representing a famous celebrity- Florence Pugh. Pugh is a young English actress who has gained a lot of recognition over the years for her incredible acting in movies like Midsomer and Black Widow. She has taken part in British independent dramas, Lady Macbeth, winning a British Independent film award. She is obviously a British icon not just by her acting but other things too. Her appearance online was of course recognised for her acting, but other publications like British Vouge were calling her dress sense “unique” and “daring”. She is shot in a medium long shot emphasising her clothes, hair and make-up. The main image is significant as it shows an influential woman like Pugh shot in the centre of the cover. The cover lines state how it is a celebration of her and the style awards and a short snippet as to what is to come inside.  The copy of the magazine is black and white, which makes Pugh herself standout. This hints that Elle's main selling point isn't what's to come inside but actually is Pugh.
