Magazine Research - Vogue

Vogue is an American monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine that covers a range of topics including fashion, beauty, life, culture etc. It was founded in 1892 and has featured various actors, musicians, models, athletes and other well-known celebrities on their front covers. Vogue has enjoyed international success, with both standard and special editions published around the globe. One of the world's most prominent fashion magazines, it has heavily influenced the development of the fashion magazine industry and continues to shape modern fashion trends. Vogue's mission statement is "To the creation of original and high-quality fashion, beauty and cultural trends content, leading our readers to what will happen next." Since 1988, Anna Wintour became the editor-in-chief for Vogue and strived to make the brand more approachable and feel younger, by directing focus to new concepts of fashion to appeal to a wider audience.

Vogue’s June 2019 issue of the magazine featured the well-known actress Zendaya, who has featured in various movies and tv shows including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home, The Greatest Showman, Dune, and Euphoria. Zendaya is now considered one of the biggest names within the industry and she has won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Like many magazines, the main feature on the cover, Zendaya, dominates the whole page, even cutting Vogues logo off making it partly readable. This is done to make the celebrity who is featured stand out and be the first thing that is noticed on the cover to attract more readers. Although the logo is cut off, it still remains obvious that this is a Vogue magazine due to the bright red colour and the font used which is continuous for all Vogue products. On the right of Zendaya, there is a direct quote from her interview for the magazine which reads “I was honest-to-God terrified”. This tells us that Zendaya will be talking about her personal experiences and her life, which may appeal to a lot of people who have a desire to know more about celebrites and their lives that we wont usually get to see. Even though Vogue is mainly a fashion and beauty magazine, this issue seems to include more about the featured celebrites lives along with all the topics they conventionally discuss. Just from the front cover, the genre of the magazine is revealed through many ways. The copy at the bottom reads “chic bikinis, playful prints, and dresses to dance all night in!”, which is directly mentioning the fashion element of the magazine. The shiny background and Zendaya’s gold simmery dress also reveals the genre and conventions of fashion magazines as they are usually very glamourous and expensive looking.

The wesbite for Vogue is very conventional for online versions of magazines with their logo being at the top of the page, different sub-headings dividing their content into topics (fashion, beauty, culutre, living, shopping etc). This allows for its online readers to choose whay content suits their needs, which can be a big appeal of their website. Like other websites, the homepage consists of a ‘Today’s Stories’ section where the most recent and up-to-date articles are posted.
