Media Diaries: Too many ads?

It's a common debate around our culture in general asking the question "are there too many ads?" and personally I don't think there are, I believe that ads overtime have become an integral part of our day-to-day life in many different ways. I'll go through them now.

They bring people together

As the subtitle might suggest, ads can bring people together and even be an event that people look forward to, a good example being the annual John Lewis Christmas ads that air every year, people look forward to seeing them, and in some cases, it may even be their "turning point" of when the Christmas season starts. Overall ads like these lighten up peoples days and do much more good than bad.

They help you in buying things that you might want

The entire point of ads is for the company to show off their product or service in hopes that the viewer will buy it, but, well, someone's not going to buy something if they don't want or need it are they? In that case isn't it a good thing (most of the time) that ads are showing you things that you could buy that you would like, especially targeted ads online, where you're (theoretically) given ad that are more likely to appeal to you, therefore they show you things that if you bought them you might become happier.

The economy

The last reason I think ads are very important is that without them, the amount of people buying things, especially when it comes to entertainment products such as games and movies would probably be drastically lower, causing us to have a substantially lower economy and that's a bad thing.
