Music Marketing #4

Coldplay is a British rock band that was formed in London in 1996. The band's members include Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion. Known for their melodic and emotive sound, Coldplay's music often combines elements of rock, pop, and alternative genres. The band is also known for their energetic and visually stunning live performances, which often incorporate elaborate stage designs and multimedia elements; along with this, the band's music often explores themes of love, introspection, and social issues. Their style has evolved over the years, ranging from introspective and melancholic to more upbeat and experimental.

The magazine cover is pretty packed, with the band taking up most of the page. The text above the bands name reads 'there is a light at the end of the tunnel...' suggesting that this interview may be less about the band and more about motivation and mental health. This is further supported by the text underneath the bands name reading 'how to rebuild your life.' In the bottom left of the page, the magazine advertises a 'Q awards backstage special' about the bands singer. The magazine also features a picture of Chris Martin and another British musician, Noel Gallagher. The words 'backstage special' suggests exclusivity; this is further reinforced by the stamp 'world exclusive' on top of the bands name.

The bands website appears to slightly differ from the usual format of artists websites. The website is entirely taken over by the bands new album 'Music of the spheres' along with the bands upcoming world tour. The colour palette of the site matches the album cover, and has a retro tech aesthetic.

In the tour section of the website, inclusivity and sustainability are advertised, suggesting that the band strive for a welcoming environment at their concerts while also trying to minimize the issue of global warming and to play their part in helping save the planet.

Paradise was released as a single from their fifth studio album"Mylo Xyloto," in 2011. Paradise features a mix of electronic and rock elements, and its lyrics convey themes of hope, escape, and finding a better place. The song's music video, which features an elephant named "Ella" traveling to "paradise," garnered attention for its imaginative and visually stunning concept.

The first shot is of the African Savannah in which there are trees and herds of animals moving at the bottom. The warm colour tone conveys that the song is upbeat and fun.

The next section of the video has our elephant held in captivity in the zoo. Here he counts how many days he's gone without seeing his friends, before escaping the zoo.

Throughout the video, the elephant holds up cardboard pieces with the lyrics drawn onto them, which adds a unique element to the video.

In the video, the elephant travels on the train and to the airport in an attempt to return to hid friends. The video uses lots of British iconography like the underground sign, the Heathrow airport sign and the red telephone box.

The elephant ends up riding a unicycle to get to his friends. The unicycle adds an element of comedy, but this shot in particular is symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing for the audience. In this section of the video, the man removes the elephant suit’s head in order to take a breath. This is the first time where it is revealed that Chris Martin is the man in the suit.

This is the climax of the video, as the elephants are reunited and begin playing music together. The warm lighting furthers reinforces the joy felt by the elephants in this moment.

Then, as the guitar solo comes in, the video changes to the shots of the concert, where we see that the band members still have parts of the elephant suit on. Coldplay's concerts are known to be a visual treat, as they use lights and various other visual elements are very vivid and bold.

The comparison of the elephants being free and happy once they are reunited and where they belong could be related to the band members and suggest that Coldplay are where they belong when they are performing together for their fans.
