My chosen genre of music is Britpop, and the four bands I will be analysing from this are Suede, Pulp, Space, and Oasis. The other 4 bands I will be analysing are from a similar musical background though not quite Britpop and will be Keane, Stereophonics, Radiohead, and Bloc Party.
Oasis, arguably the most successful band in the Britpop industry, formed in Manchester in 1991 and disbanded in 2009. They signed to Creation Records in 1993, a record with other bands such as Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Velvet Crush.
The music video for Sunday Morning Call begins with a man in his home who appears to be being chased. The house he is in is nothing fancy and appeals to the genre - the Britpop element of the working class audience. The man is watching nothing and is chased out of his house by two men, showing the video as a narrative.
The man is drinking alcohol and is showed with numerous empty cans and bottles around him suggesting he is an alcoholic and could give an insight to who is chasing him. Behind him, behind a set of bead curtains, we see Noel Gallagher playing the guitar and singing, and throughout the house we see the whole band. This shows that the video doubles as being a performance as well as a narrative.
The man is taken to what appears to be some sort of asylum and he is made to take pills which we soon see him spit out into his hand. The video follows a clever storyline which matches the rhythm of the song and the colouring of the video shows the feelings being felt by the man in the video, trapped in this ward that he doesn't want to be in, living in a depressing state and could relate to audiences who feel trapped in a lower class lifestyle, which would be the typical Britpop audience.
The song was released as a single and is actually referred to by Noel as his least favourite Oasis song (personally I think it's their best and he's too cocky to admit it.)
The band played in Knebworth park in 1996 and it was the most attended concert in the history of time, with a quarter of a million people showing. The concert did huge numbers for them and even now, 25 years later, is widely known and even had a documentary made on it.
The band also went on tour with a number of other bands big in the Britpop industry which brings more attention to them from the other bands' fans and does the same vise versa.
