Music Marketing #5

Phoebe Bridgers is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, known for her indie rock and folk music. She gained widespread recognition with her debut album "Stranger in the Alps," which was released in 2017. Her music is often characterized by her introspective and emotive lyrics, accompanied by her delicate and heartfelt vocal style.

In this magazine cover she wears a black and white outfit, a colour scheme that fits in with her website. The text on the bottom left of the cover reads 'press play', encouraging the magazines readers to listen to her music. Underneath this, the text says 'Phoebe Bridgers on self care, redefining folk music and singing from the heart. Some parts of the text, including 'self care, folk music, singing and heart' are capitalized, indicating they hold more importance and drawing the readers attention. In particular 'folk music' and 'singing from the heart' gives insight to the reader as to what type of artist she is, as her music style is revealed and also the type of songs she makes.

Additionally, the background of the cover seems to be somewhere in nature, with sunlight on the artists face. This adds a more natural and authentic feel to the cover.

Phoebe Bridger's website has a very Gothic feel to it, with the colour scheme being black and white, and a skeleton drawing the most attention, as it is a contrast to the completely black background. On the left and right of the skeleton image are the lyrics 'you had to go, I know I know I know, and I gotta go now'; the lyrics are from one of her songs 'I know the end' from her more recent album 'Punisher'.

When you hover over the skeleton picture, the website turns white, with the previously white font turning black. This adds a more unique and fun feel to the website.

Different to previous artist's websites, Phoebe Bridger's website doesn't have that much to it, it has a more simple feel instead of feeling bombarded with information. At the bottom of this page the texts reads 'a haunted house with a picket fence,'; more lyrics from 'I know the end', suggesting that this is either a fan favorite or her personal favorite.

Motion Sickness is one of her most well-known tracks and has gained significant attention for its emotive lyrics and delivery. "Motion Sickness" is often interpreted as a song about a failed or tumultuous relationship, with the artist singing about the challenges of navigating emotional ups and downs. Some argue that the title "Motion Sickness" can be seen as a metaphor for feeling dizzy and disoriented in a relationship that's constantly changing and causing emotional turmoil. The song showcases Phoebe Bridgers' signature style, combining introspective lyrics with a melodic indie rock sound. The raw and vulnerable nature of her lyrics, paired with her evocative vocals, has resonated with many listeners, contributing to the song's popularity within the indie music scene.

While the video may not be innovative and strikingly different to typical videos, it fits with the melancholic tone of the song while also having some fun elements to it.

The video is a performance video, with the artist lip-syncing while she rides a scooter around the streets of LA. She wears a suit, perhaps reversing traditional clothing expectations for men and women, as typically suits were seen as men's clothing.

The scooter along with the helmet and sunglasses add a comedic element to the video, as it probably wouldn't be something you see everyday.

After riding her scooter, she ends up at a bar with karaoke. As she walks through the bar lip-syncing someone hands her a microphone where she continues to sing her song as if she were singing it as karaoke.

Behind her, the lyrics of the song show up accompanied with a video. This adds a more authentic feel to the video as it breaks the fourth wall in a way, with the video transitioning from being a music video to her singing her song as is it were for karaoke.
