Music Marketing Research: McFly

McFly are an English pop-rock band who have been around since 2003. The band consists of band members:

- Tom Fletcher (vocals, guitar, piano)

- Danny Jones (vocals, guitar, harmonica

- Harry Judd (drums)

- Dougie Poynter (bass, back-up vocals)

The band has gone on to be a source for influence for up and coming musicians at the time they were at the height of popularity, most recognisably Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson of the boy band 1D ( 1 Direction), citing McFly were the opening gig of their first ever concert they went to and have gone on to record 7 studio albums and sell over 10M albums worldwide. From 2004-07, the band were initially signed to Island Records, before originating their own label afterwards in 2008 which is known as Super Records due to creative differences, with Universal being worldwide distributors of albums produced by the label since 2010.

Music Video: All About You

The track All About You released as a double A side single alongside their cover of Carole Kings You've Got a Friend, and was the anthem for Comic Relief 2005 with all royalties made from the song being donated to the charity organisation Make Poverty History, which immediately tells us of the passion the band have for recording new/original material and the good intentions they have with their music. This can also be seen with the CU shots of the musicians playing along to the song, showing their love and commitment to recording music. The video is even self-referential to this at the start with the opening title card with the copy that reads the title of the song, with some of the lettering adopting a red nose, an event during Comic Relief. This title card is also self-referential to the bands inspiration from films, with the band name coming from the surname of Marty McFly, the lead character from the Back to the Future trilogy, implying the intent of the video is to be entertaining despite the cause it was released for.

The video features the band preparing to record the song which we see them do, as drummer Harry Judd arrives late and has to make his way into the recording studio, alongside this there are other mishaps, with the song stopping mid-way through when one of the plugs are unplugged. The comedic elements of the video which the use of W/S are used to emphasise are also met alongside an ensemble cast of British comedians such as Harry Hill, Graham Norton and Johnny Vegas just to name a few, which would target a mainstream audience due to the cast of familiar faces, adding to the entertainment factor of the video which audiences are likely to understand. The videos use of fast cuts also emphasises the upbeat tone of the song, and is an element commonly found in pop music videos.

Magazine: Drafted

This edition of Drafted was published in November of 2013, and features the band 10 years since they originated, highlighted by the copy "A DECADE IN MUSIC." The use of dramatic, earthy colours adds to the bands maturity and emphasises how far they have aged and developed since their original roots. Their dramatic faces and polite postures also adds to how old they have become, and no longer 'kids' at least in appearance. The copy reading "FRIENDSHIP" also implies how close the band is and alongside this is "MAINTAINING EXPECTATIONS" which the audience will imply contains exclusive information and therefore enocurages them to read along and see how they are still together as a band even after all these years, just outliving even the most influential band out there, The Beatles, The copy also suggests they all still have a passion for creating music and care for their fans and know what they expect out of them.
