Background
Shugo Tokumaru is a Japanese singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who debuted in May 2004 in America his record label is Polyvinylrecords.
Music video
The video is neither a conventional performance or native music video. and aims to appeal to the explorer audience as classified by Rubican's 4 C's like the music is self appealing simply as an experience to seek out. This is also appealing as it is hidden on the record labels youtube channel.
The video uses a set of enigma codes it confuses the audience during the opening of the video this is done through the use on none specific or relatable shapes/objects appearing and disappearing in sync to the music. The video then cuts to the silhouetted man walking towards the camera in no desirable straight line moving easily from side to side the camera then cuts to a wide shot to show the audience that it is one singular long stream of people walking towards the camera. Additionally the use of a plain background force the audience to focus on the movement of the stop animation. Furthermore the video possibly use semantic codes the use of a singular continuous unbroken stream being symbolic for a human being life and it has exciting, unexpected or explainable moments but it's mostly just the monotonous simple things like walking but that is not to mean that we can't enjoy these things and make them our own as shown by the charter dancing and not moving on a direct path to were he as to go.
Magazine
The article 'Five minutes with Shugo Tokumaru' is used to appeal to the audience by giving a greater insight into the artist, his style and his views. Furthermore the title is conventionally appealing and conforms to Steve Neale's Genre Theory of the audience deriving pleasure from convention. Additionally the magazine's mode of address in the article is slightly unconventional making it feel more like a transcript of a conversation than an actual article this can be appealing as it adds authenticity to the words used and gives the feel that it is the literal phrasing of Shugo Tokumaru as opposed to a summary of them made to sound better or worse decided by a writer and editor.
Furthermore the writer makes reference to the music video above and talks with Shugo Tokumaru about the influence of colour and visualisation of music in making the video the linking of the video is effective here as the audience is forcefully made aware of what the writer and artist are discussing.
Furthermore the images of Shugo Tokumaru could fulfil the audience need for affiliation as in the first image he is shown through the rule of thirds not looking at the camera and instead looking away to the left but the the second image he is shown the be looking directly towards the audience this could have the effect of drawing the audience in and wanting affiliation with the artist and wanting to know more about him.
