Oppenheimer Curren & Seaton

Oppenheimer is a 2023 drama/thriller movie. It is set during World War II. It

follows Lt Gen Leslie Groves and physicist Robert Oppenheimer in developing and

designing the atomic bomb.

I chose Oppenheimer as it was the third highest

grossing film in the box office earning $939 million worldwide in 2023.

Curren and Seaton theory is about power in the media. The main point of this

theory is that the media is controlled by a small number of companies which are

mainly driven by profit and power, the media generally limits or inhibits variety

creativity and quality. The last point of this theory is that more socially diverse

patterns of ownership help to create more varied and adventurous media

productions.

Oppenheimer is directed and written by Christopher Nolan. Christopher has a

specific style of filmmaking which is about exploring different concepts including

time. He has created two war films, Oppenheimer and Dunkirk. Curren and

Seaton may say that Oppenheimer is a more creative film via Christopher being

creative in his films. This proves that being owned by Syncopy Inc Atlas

Entertainment which are smaller companies compared to Warner's brothers that

the media products are more creative as they can be mor experimental with what

they produce. Oppenheimer does covey what Curren & Seaton says by diverse

ownership.

However, Oppenheimer does not convey to Curren & Seaton as the theory fails to

recognize that the media limits creativity and quality. As Oppenheimer, being

distributed by Universal Pictures shows that a big company can distribute a film

differently to what has been released in the past few years and have it succeeded

whilst being out at the same time with Barbie.

Overall, I think that Oppenheimer does support Curren and Seaton power theory

as the smaller production company has released a creative film which succeeded

in the box office which not many people thought wouldn’t happen as their budget

might have not been as big compared to Disney or Warner's Brothers.
