James Curran and Jean Seaton media industries theory explores the idea that the media is controlled by a small number of companies primarily driven by the logic of profit and power. Curran and Seaton believe that this media concentration limits and/or inhibits variety, creativity and quietly in the media products that we consume.

If we were to compare content produced for television, by large media conglomerates, to independent content created for online platforms such as YouTube, we wold find that notably are the patterns of ownership very different, but the content is, too.
