Ready Player One directed by Steven Spielberg takes place in a dystopian future where much of the world has fallen into decline due to problems such as overpopulation, environmental deterioration and state capitalism.This causes most people to spend a majority of their time immersing themselves and otherwise living in the OASIS. OASIS is a virtual reality world , The OASIS is also heavily influenced by the creators love of pop culture of the late 20th century. The virtual world allows players to create their own characters/avatars as they indulge themselves the the VR worlds many functions such as racing or going to bars.
Following the creator of the OASIS death, it is revealed that he created one final game in the OASIS called Anorak's Quest. The mission calls for players to track down three keys through a series of smaller missions, all of this in order to find an item that will grant them full control and ownership of the OASIS and its assets . A young man named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) becomes the first person to complete one of these three mini-missions, he becomes a celebrity and draws the attention of Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) a famous OASIS player and is also made a target by the IOI (Innovative Online Industries) CEO Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), who is determined to gain control of the OASIS at any cost.
The OASIS itself is the star of the movie as thanks to the current technology Spielberg can direct amazing scenes which would not be physical possible in the real world but works in a digitally rendered one. Scenes inside the OASIS look almost life-like, the movie itself can be enjoyed or understood by most people as it features iconic characters such as PAC-MAN which most individuals would know whether they have knowledge of pop culture or not.
Ready Player one maintains a steady pace through about two thirds of the movie, by this point fans of the novel will have found noticeable changes made in the stories narrative and character developments. The last third of the movie shifts back to the real world as a threat is posed by the IOI. the IOI despite attempts to make Sorrento a memorable villain the evil corporation feels generic and overly used.
Ready Player One is a mixture of pop culture history and Sci-Fi/Adventure which creates a very nostalgic experience with brilliantly directed acting and spirited action sequences.
