The issue that I've chosen to look at for this is addiction which has been portrayed as a story line in coronation street and also portrayed in the song Halo by Boston Manor.
In coronation street, the doctor Ali started taking diazepam in an attempt to help him feel better after someones death. The show uses the doctor to demonstrate that addiction can happen to anyone, its significant because we know a doctor would understand the awful effects and possibly be familiar with the harm addiction to things like painkillers causes so the person with the addiction being a doctor is an important thing to represent as it really shows that anyone can go through addiction. The tv show also reveals that he's battling the addiction alone and in secrecy when he sends away paramedics because he's scared they'll find out showing a representation that people can be embarrased by addiction and don't want other people finding out so they don't tell anyone about what they're going through. The storyline shows the effect addiction can have on a family as well as the individual who is suffering.
The band Boston Manor has a song called Halo which is about addiction and there being no way out. This song centres around drug usage and trying to battle addiction. The representation of addiction consuming people is really apparent here and a lot of people struggle to accept help and get clean which is what is being talked about in the song for example in the bridge when lead singer Henry says 'a quick fix and i'll get clean'. During the song it talks about withdrawal symptoms as well and how it affects the persons life. This is just a personal account of addiction so it goes into more detail about how it affects their life such as the fact they've pushed friends away and how they're now just doing it to escape reality as sometimes addiction can end up meaning they have the inability to be satisfied or find joy in real life which is a very real representation.
