This is the Daily Mirror's front page from Wednesday, 31st January 2018. The masthead reads, 'The Daily Mirror, Fighting For You' in a typical 'red top' tabloid box. This could be a reference to the fact that they are a left wing newspaper. A left wing ideology is also further reinforced on the front page by the image of Theresa May, with the caption, 'Outrage at Tory Brexit damage report cover-up'

The main headline is, 'The Great British Cancer Scandal' which is an intertextual reference to 'The Great British Bake Off', using humour to report on an incredibly serious topic. It also uses proximity because everyone who is British will understand the reference. Moreover, the use of the word 'great' emphasises the size of the story and the fact that it is happening on a large scale and is affecting a large number of people.

However, the main image is not related to the main (largest) headline and is of two Strictly Come Dancing stars. The anchorage for this photograph is the headline, 'The TRUTH behind Strictly Brendan's axing'. This image may have been chosen to be the main image, due to the currency of the event and also the aspect of celebrities.
