Semiotic analysis: Newspaper front cover

  1. Masthead: The title 'Daily Mirror' gives of the connotations of reliability, and reporting on the news that reflects current social/political issues that can affect everybody. The paper is owned by Reach plc, whose priorities with their national newspaper reflect the arguments to be made about the papers title, as they have a purpose to "serve their audience with a well-curated mix of light and shade, as just like our own reflection in the mirror, we can either get the best or worst look of ourselves. With most of the masthead using lower case letters, a more personal mode of address is presented which is more reliable and trustworthy considering this is a paper that a lot of audiences can relate to in terms of the topics and ssues being discussed.

2. Language: The language the paper uses to discuss its issues is traditional/formal and what is expected of a paper that is information heavy, using terms such as 'drastic action' and non-essential' give of the qualities of a newspaper that has a very dependable level of education, making the information feel that more authentic to read about. The front cover also uses statistics, and information narrowed down from what the PM at the time, Boris Johnson stated in his emergency national conference with the quote about '£30 fines for lockdown rule breaking' and 'gatherings of three or less only.' And just like the title of the paper itself, make the information that appears on the front cover reinforces the idea the paper is reporting on factual information only and something that will have an impact on us all.

3. Layout and style: The front cover has a significant focus on one topic that is seen towards the middle and bottom half of the article, focusing primarily on the new at the time lockdown laws being introduced at the time the paper was published. This section uses the golden ratio, which refers to a text being read in a clockwise rotation, as the bullet points relate to the main image in the centre of Boris Johnson, a figure of power and law/order, being the PM at the time making the information clear to read and understand due to its seriousness.
