Street fighter V - Representation

Street Fighter V is a fighting game developed by Capcom and Dimps and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2016. Street Fighter first came out in 1987 and has built up quite the fanbase over the years. One of the main things that gravitate players towards the game is the characters, every character has their own unique look and ability and with 40 different characters to select from, there is bound to be a character for everyone.

Street fighters characters are based upon stereotypes, some of which being:

Zangief (Russian) - Big, burly, loud, broken English, ruthless, strong

Vega (Spanish) - Prissy, dresses like matador, thick accent, pretty boy

Ryu (Japanese) - Quiet, strong spirit, warrior, destiny-bound, honourable

Ken (American) - Proud, cocky, extroverted, joker, blonde hair brown eyes

We can use Stuart Hall's representation theory show that stereotyping reduces people to a few simple characteristics or traits, we can see this through the stereotypes used in SFV as the characteristics of the characters are limited due to their archetypes.
