Taylor Swift first started off by performing at local events and uploading her early songs online before landing a record deal with her first single 'Tim McGraw' in 2006, featured on her debut album 'Taylor Swift'. This deal introduced her as a young country artist, with her storytelling style with heartfelt lyrics. Swift became relatable to a teenage audience, especially young girls and their journey throughout life experiences including family relations, heart breaks, friendships and insecurities.
Taylor recently announced her 12th studio album "The Life of a Showgirl" which she wrote on her tour "The Eras Tour". The tour became the biggest concert tour in history, closing in December 2024 with over $2.08 billion in ticket sales and more than 10 million fans in attendance across 149 shows on five continents, making her the first solo artist ever to sell that many tickets on a single tour. I was lucky enough to experience going to 2 shows, (Liverpool Night 2 and 3), seeing Taylor live after being a fan for many years was lifechanging. The way she captures everyone's attention from each era functioning an act in a grand revue. She moves from wide-eyed country ingénue (Fearless, Speak Now) to glittering pop star (1989), to darker, self-aware performer (Reputation), to theatrical storyteller (Folklore and Evermore), and finally to mature woman reflecting on love, loss, and legacy (Midnights). In doing so, she stages the life cycle of a showgirl: the debut, the rise to fame, the struggle with image and power, and the eventual reclamation of identity.
My own music video will be inspired by her hit song "Picture to Burn", which highlights her anger and frustration towards boys. Swift used her humour, sass and attitude to turn heartbreak into empowerment, to inspire others to do the same if feeling upset as using a time others would be upset to a "look what you're missing". My video will explore using the storytelling aspect inspired by Taylor with being sick of boys and a rebellious tone.
She often uses her music videos to experiment symbolism and 'easter eggs' for her fans to investigate with her upcoming projects - including albums, eras or collabs. Her videos feature cinematography, detailed sets, giving them a timeless movie-like quality.
