Social enterprises are businesses that are changing the world for the better as they believe in a fairer and more equal society. The Big Issue is a social enterprise as helps its vendors in reinvesting and improving their lives by providing training and employment opportunities and is dedicated more for the people than for the company itself.
It sells its magazines for £1.5 and the vendors sell them for £2.5, giving its vendors 100% profit. This helps people escape poverty by doing what the government should be doing by not treating them as outsiders or charity cases - it gives them a second chance to get their lives back on track.
In 2018, Cafedirect was awarded Social Enterprise of the Year as it has clear vision, excellence in impact, and has demonstrated as well as promoted social enterprise beyond the sector. Unlike any other coffee company, the 100% Fairtrade coffee company invests 50% of its profits into Producers Direct , a UK charity that works directly with farmers to improve sustainability and livelihoods, right across the coffee growing world. The charity is run by farmers, for farmers, taking leadership and developing innovative solutions to the challenges they face. Cafedirect has invested over £6m to date.
Cafedirect works directly with 29 producer organisations in 13 countries across Latin America, Asia and Africa. Due to the direct work, it ensures a straightforward, respectful and fair trade. The passion and expertise the farmers bring to every one of their products allows them to offer the best tasting coffee, tea and cocoa to all customers.
