The Big Issue: Britain in the 90s

Updated: Oct 15, 2021

  • The Poll Tax: Tax issued as a fixed sum on every liable person without reference to income or resources. They were seen as an unfair way of raising revenue for local councils

  • Students and the registered unemployed had to pay 20%, some large families occupying relatively small houses saw their charges go up considerably, and the tax was therefore accused of saving the rich money and moving the expenses onto the poor.

  • 1990 Recession: GDP (basically the size/wealth of the economy) fell by 1.7%, employment fell by 3.4% and the unemployment rate rose by 10.8%

  • It is said that there were around 150,000 people who were homeless in 1990.

  • Multiple anti-capitalist riots happened across the decade

  • In 1997, on August 31st, Princes Diana died. This, more so the rumours around the incident, caused a change in how Brits viewed not only the Royal Family but the media as well.
