Star Wars : The Last Jedi, is regarded by many fans an one of the worst star wars movies of the saga. When this movie was released there was alot of controversy, as many fans thought it ruined the franchise as there were many plot holes throughout, and some bad direction in certain parts. An example of this is at the start of the movie, where we are put straight into a starfighter battle. We see that the First Order is in pursuit of the Resistance and General Leia Organa leads an evacuation, However, Leader of the starfighter squadron, Poe Dameron goes againt this and plans a risky counter-attack on a First Order Dreadnought. The attack sees the loss of many pilots, and not because of the firepower of the dreadnought or tie fighters but because of the badly designed bombers, created by the director Rian Johnson. The bombers use actual physical bombs instead of the use of ion bombs, as seen in previous Star Wars media. This casues the audience to question why these bombers even exist, as they appear to rely on gravity to drop bombs, which, clearly is impossible in space. In addition the ship is far far slower than any other vehicle making it very very impractical from bombing runs and it would most likely be caught in the explosion anyway. This bomber has even further design flaws, for example the fact that a hatch at the bottom of the ship opens to release bombs, but doesnt effect the people inside and it isn't explained how this is possible, which again makes the audience ask why these bombers exist, as seen in previous films. There are much more practical vehicles for this, like the Y-Wing Bombers, which have a much greater speed, smaller size and practical weapons as the ion cannons do not rely on gravity and will not make the ship even more explosive as the new bomber seems to be, as it holds many bombs in a large target. The reason this is a problem is not because it's not realistic; as Star Wars is supposed to be a Sci-Fi Fantasy, the problem is that these bombers have no use in the star wars univers and do not fit in to the ideas that we already have learned about the universe, which takes the audience out of the movie, which is a big problem as George Lucas created Star Wars as a universe that people could escape into, and not be brought back to reality.
This is only the opening scene, and already there is an obvious lack of thought and attention put into the design of the new additions to the universe, which is why this film upset many fans so much as many things are changed about the Star Wars that they knew and loved and not for the better.
