The life changer!

Updated: Nov 20, 2021

Little Simz latest album 'sometimes I might be introvert' released only recently in September 2021 is an album that when i first heard it changed my views and upon listening to it more closely I realised it was a much more personal album that engaged with me intellectually too.

When you think about the UK rap genre, stereotypically you think about the popular male artists like Stormzy and Dave, it's quite a male dominated industry with only a handful of women rappers getting recognised in comparison, events such as Stormzy calling her a legend during his Glastonbury headline set or having her song 'venom' become a tiktok trend may of helped her gain more of an audience but i think simply from how good this album was a reason why it got so much recognition.

I noticed that pretty much other than Stefflon Don and Ms Banks, I wasn't aware of loads of female rap artists and after Little Simz and this album was brought to my attention I changed my media consumption and started listening to other female rap artists.

Little Simz took the chance to be open and honest on this album to really connect with the audience and once i had realised the lyrics it definitely connected with me, It includes themes of gratitude and womenhood and empowerment which is quite different for a rap album but really important. For example, standout track 'woman' which is described as a love letter to women celebrating womenhood and her perspective of what being a women means to her. The lyrics 'woman to woman i just want to see you glow' shows women empowerment and the importance of that in society to overcome things like misogyny which engaged me intellectually.
