The Returned - Representations - Julie

We are first introduced to Julie when she visits Mr Costa to give him a shot. We see her caring nature in this first scene in which she is featured and it sets the tone of what we are to expect of her character. Then, later on, see her on her way from work and she is on the bus. We see Victor following her. She then takes him in for the night despite having no children or any experience with looking after them, showing her caring nature.

In a later episode, we find out that seven years earlier, Julie was stabbed in the underpass on the way back from a party which gives us explanations for the scars on her stomach. We now know that Julie has been through a lot and we also see she is still traumatised by the events that took place several years earlier as she is seen having an anxiety attack, thinking that she is being attacked.

The fact that despite all that she has gone through and the events that have taken place and she still takes in Victor and looks after him, shows Julie in a positive light and someone the audience should be rooting for. Furthermore, she may considered to be relatable to the audience due to having suffered trauma in the past and that she is trying to move on, and she may be made for the audience to sympathise with her and to feel sorry for her due to the traumatic events that she has been through.

There is originally a lot of mystery surrounding her with enigma codes about who she is, due to us not exactly knowing her past and her life story. However, the audience aren't made to see her in the same way as a character such as Pierre who comes across as quite shady but Julie is shown to be wary and to not get involved in other peoples business and we are made to see her as a character with good intentions. Furthermore, she is shown as motherly due to acting as a mother figure to Victor in the show, which could

Her representation in the flashback where she is seen in fancy dress and having fun juxtaposes with her modern day representation in which she tries to live a quiet and private life, showing the audience how her stabbing negatively affected her life and her confidence and what she does. She is seen to be wearing plain clothes in the present day as well as to not stand out from the crowd and to blend into the background and in order to live her life in recluse as best as possible.
