I engaged with this film both emotionally and intellectually. It reinforced emotions due to my race and also taught things through the message of the film. I shed several tears while watching the movie and it certainly made my change my approach’s towards life.
Motivational message
The movie has a clear message if compassion. The movie's message is one of inclusion that no barrier, including race or income, should get in the way of doing right by others.
It also teaches that hard work does pay off.
Within the film Leigh Ann showed us you can come from nothing and become something just like Michael as long as you're willing to put your head down and work hard.
The film reminds one to always expect the unexpected. You never truly know when something or someone is going to come into your life to change it forever. Keep an open mind when these situations present themselves.
The message of believing in yourself is also reinforce in the film. You are the only person in control of your happiness. Others shouldn't control you with their petty thoughts. Focus on your goals and do you.
Role model
The film also supplied me with a true role model...
Leigh Anne sets a good example as an affluent socialite who lends a helping hand to a child and doesn’t let go (her entire family is helpful, as are the teachers). Michael is also a lesson in fortitude, rarely giving in to the aggression he must feel from having been neglected as a child.
On the downside, nearly all of the movie's African-American characters are portrayed as either impoverished, drug-addicted, or both, which reinforces certain stereotypes. And some characters freely indulge in racism. However, I can understand that this group is portrayed in this way in order to reinforce certain messages that the film intend to give off.
