Too many ads?

In this era. every single person is subject to seeing a range of different adverts, whether that be through a social media platform or TV programme, to billboards and bus stops, there really is no way to escape them. But has advertising gone too far? As a consumer, we are exposed to dozens of advertisements every single day, but is this too many?

Personally, despite the annoyance it can cause when you‘re about to watch a YouTube video and an advert pops up, I don’t see the harm. Although people don’t actively seek out to watch advertisements and they are only sitting through it in order to see their favourite creator, most of these advertisements come with a skip button after 5 seconds meaning we aren’t forced to see the whole thing. Most people wouldn’t know about a lot of things going on if they weren’t advertised and for some media products advertising is a vital ingredient. For example, if a pop star didn’t advertise their music video or their concert, how else would people know about the event taking place?

One of the most common form of advertisements I come across are of celebrities promoting products such as HiSmile and SugarBear Hair, and whilst people recognise this due to how often we are exposed to it and it has now become something people make fun of, I don’t think it does any harm. The Kardashians are one of the most recognisable for promoting products as such.
