Too many ads

A study published in 2015 found that the average person will see 98.5 ads per day. No matter where you look, advertisements are completely unavoidable. You might not even realise that what you’re looking at is an ad, they’re so ingrained into our society.  When the average person thinks of an advertisement, they think of something on TV or a website, or playing before a film at the cinema. They don’t think of degraded posters on streetlights or a collage of items in the window of a shop or the top three results on google that paid to show up.

I can’t even count how many advertisements feature in the image above, yet I’m aware of 5 shops that look exactly like that within a 10-minute walking distance of my house. The amount of ads present when just walking down the street is ridiculous, especially as so many people don’t even realise, they’re being advertised to.

I think another issue with the ubiquity of advertising in our society is the amount of overconsumption it is promoting, especially around Christmas. The point of advertising is to encourage as many people as possible to buy a product/service as many times as possible, to maximise profit with no consideration for how much of the product should be consumed.
