For decades, advertisements have been used by brands to promote their products, from television commercials in our homes, to huge billboards in cities. However, now they even invade our social medias, popping up on our phones and computers. Websites that you visit are tracked, and adverts are personalised by what you view online. They play on our needs, using babies, families and animals in their adverts to try and get us to purchase their products.
Most of us have accepted this as a part of life now- that adverts are to be expected in our everyday lives. Generally they're seen as more of an annoyance than a big issue, but is it right that we have no choice in being manipulated this way?
In my opinion, it is wrong that everywhere we go there are advertisements. Although companies must try and get business, we should be allowed some relief from pop-ups and annoying videos when we try to browse the web. We should be able to purchase products on our own accord and not because we've been influenced by constant advertising.
However, in some ways they can be a good thing. They allow us to discover new products and brands and often the quality of an advert will reflect the quality of the advertiser. Also, the making of an advert takes so much planning and thought to make it perfect, to ensure that their target audience does not choose a competitor's product over their own. In a way, an advert can sometimes be seen as a mini-movie, for example- the annual John Lewis Christmas advert.
In conclusion, I believe that there are far too many adverts in this day and age, but they can be useful and even entertaining in some cases.
