you ain't got a clue let's be honest

George Gerbner’s cultivation theory states that exposure to repeated patterns of representation over long periods of time can shape and influence the way in which people perceive the world around them. An obvious example of media that can influence the views of the consumer is news media. However, I think there is a lot to take from the modern world of grime music, especially with Stormzy.

Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr is a British rapper known professionally as Stormzy. Originating in South London, Stormzy gained attention on the grime scene in after a series of freestyles over classic beats. Since first being picked up he has released 2 albums and received 6 awards total. Withing his music there have been many references to current social and political contexts probably most famously in his hit single ‘Vossi Bop’ where he proclaims “fuck the government and fuck Boris.” Vossi Bop was released at a similar time as the 2019 general election in which Boris Johnson was running as leader of the Conservative party. During this election, Stormzy was nothing but outspoken about his political beliefs, regularly reminding his followers of his allegiance to the Labour party and urging his fans to go out and vote so their voice is heard.

As somebody with a large following, his regular reference to his own personal belief has room for influence. Although he no longer has public social media accounts, he averages just over 8 million monthly listeners meaning, he still has a large audience to what he says. There are regular references to Stormzy’s Christian beliefs throughout his discography including “Matthew 12 so I don’t talk, John 19s why i never got caught” and “it’s not by blood and it’s not by birth but oh my God what a God i serve.”
