You Need To Calm Down - Taylor Swift - Media diary week 7

Taylor Swift's "You Need To Calm Down" is a pop anthem for equality and understanding. The The LGBTQ anthem, glorifies the homosexual and transgender agenda with rainbow symbols, a gay wedding, drag queens, and a few cameos from some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood. The singer debuted the new video for the song on "Good Morning America" Monday in the midst of LGBTQ Pride Month and included a call to action. "Let's show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly treat all our citizens equally," reads an on-screen message at end of the video demonstrating the ideological nature of this video and its aims to show the audience the inequality still present in society regarding members of the LGBTQ + community.

There are various codes in this music video which help to get the desired message of needing LGBTQ equality across. For example, throughout the video, the pride flag is continuously displayed in different settings and forms. Along with this, the entire music video is extremely colourful and bright. This is possibly suggesting that we need equality everywhere and that the LGBTQ community cannot simply be ignored.

The video features numerous celebrities who identify as LGBTQ, including Ellen DeGeneres, Billy Porter, RuPaul, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Adam Lambert, Todrick Hall, Hayley Kiyoko, Adam Rippon, Chester Lockhart, Dexter Mayfield, Hannah Hart, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness and Tan France etc. These famous faces would attract a wider audience and therefore the message would reach a greater number of people, resulting in more activism and success for the video. Some of these people are met by chanting protestors holding anti-gay signs such as ''Adam + Eve not Adam + Steve''.

The lyrics lecture those unsupportive of the homosexual lifestyle, demanding they “calm down.” The video’s message specifically targets Christians, portraying them as unclean and unintelligent. She presents these “Christians” as protesters holding signs that say, “Adam + Eve NOT Adam + Steve,” “Homosexuality is SIN,” and “Get a Brain Moran's.” Furthermore,

another sign reads, “Hell,” surrounded by red flames.
