Advertising - Jean Paul Gaultier

Despite the fact that this is an advertisement for a perfume, the representations of both the female and male are completely different from one another. The woman is clearly sexualised through her costume as whilst the male is fully clothed, she is wearing lingerie and is wearing more typically feminine colours of nudes and pastel pink whilst he is wearing white and blue.

Feminists may not like this advert as they may deem it unfair for the male to be presented as a normal person whilst the lady is being advertised specifically dependant on her looks. Also, they will argue and say that a perfume advert does not have to demonise women in this way and exploit them for their body as the advert could have been just as effective if they were fully clothed. Perfume adverts are open to being in many types of settings therefore it was clearly an advertising decision to represent the genders in this way.

Furthermore, the bottle of both perfumes is shaped like a human body, the mans having a muscular build and the females having breasts and a curvy figure. This represents ideas of what a perfect body may be to the general public and could make people feel self conscious if they do not fit into this body type, or aspire to look like the bottle. It also clearly differentiates the female and male audience and shows that they are each targeting a different demographic.
