Applying Representation Theory to Zoella - Stuart Hall Representation Construction

Stuart Hall Representation Construction:

The idea that representation is the production of meaning through language, with language defined in its broadest sense as a set of signs

The idea that the relationship between concepts and signs is governed by codes

The idea that stereotyping, as a form of representation, reduces people to a few simple characteristics or traits. Additionally stereotyping tends to occur when there are inequalities of power as subordinate or excluded groups are constructed as different or 'other'

The Zoella website tends to represent women in a more stereotypical and traditional way. For example, they are often shown to have typical feminine interests such as nails, hair, makeup and clothes and additionally, the menu bar titled 'Recipes' indicates that women are generally meant to be seen as homemakers and cantered around domesticity. The post '4 Festive Bakes You Need To Make This Season' reinforces this idea. The use of the word 'need' indicates that being in the kitchen is an essential part of a woman's identity, a requirement. Furthemrore, the post is written by a guest writer names Jenny Bayliss.
