Attitude - Audience theories

David Gauntlett Pick and Mix- The website holds a lot of different content related to homosexual culture, but have different articles and categories related to different industries and interests.

These 2 articles both have the same underlying tones in regards to homosexuality and raising awareness for different struggles that the LGBTQ community goes through. However, both are done with different contexts. The article regarding It's a sin talks about the amount of people who watched a show and how there was a rise in testing for HIV. This is more of an entertainment piece due to the well known nature of both the show and the celebrities represented such as Olly Alexander. The use of colour also reflects a more lively tone. This article will attract an audience with an ideology that entertainment is important and is a good way to spread awareness for different struggles. Attitude is likely to attract people interested in fashion and entertainment with these articles.

There is also a more informative article regarding Pride dates. This will attract an audience that is more interested in the activism part of the LGBTQ community and would like to be informed rather that entertained. However, this will also attract a social audience who may look to enjoy themselves along with taking part in a good cause. This view is reflected by the 2 people enjoying themselves in the picture.

This 2 articles show a good contrast in how people may have different interests and ideologies, yet these people may still enjoy the content in Attitude as there is a varied range of articles, all with the same theme of LGBTQ awareness and expression.

on facebook, people use their platform to share their opinion on the different matters that Attitude share. Different posts may have different focusses, but the people who read these posts may have differing views. In the comment section for the article regarding Its a sin, there are people who have different priorities regarding the article. As seen above, some people are seen praising the show, whereas others are more focussed on the HIV testing part and are reinforcing how important it is to get tested. This comment section here shows us pick and mix in action, where people will consume media that follows their ideology and read it in aa certain way in which they find to be the most important to them.

George Gerbner Cultivation Model - There are segmients within the website which try and tell the audience what they believe is right and wrong.

The language used within this article allows us to identify that Attitude are also in support of the man being arrested and condemn the police. Attitude use this as a way to expose their ideology to the audience by saying that they are correct in supporting the man being arrested and that he completed a completely rational act of kissing another man. This can be seen as the website telling you how to live your life, by telling you that the police in this situation are wrong.

This may also be seen as aligning with the dominant ideology, as many of the readers will be aware that being arrested for this act isn't acceptable; Society will deem this act as normal.

Here we see a tennis player advocating for people to speak out against homophobia. This copy is partnered with a picture of him taking the knee, a symbolic code for the BLM Movement. This is a form of campaigning that the magazine is condoning and partaking in by sharing his thoughts. Homophobia is seen as a negative thing in society that people condemn, however it is still prevalent and people do not usually speak up when they are the victim. Attitude are both reinforcing common ideologies that people hold, and they are telling people how to live by telling people to speak up about the struggles.

Clay Shirky- One way that the audience are encouraged to share their thoughts with their own friend group and others online is through the little row of social media handles. These link to Attitudes different social media pages, where sharing, liking and commenting thoughts are all highly encouraged.

Attitude also has a competition page, where the audience is encouraged to take surveys and partake in different competitions in order to have a chance to win prizes.

The magazine has a clear ideology that it wants to both be active with the audience, and the audience to be active with the magazine and themselves. The fact that the magazine has a website shows how important interactivity and connectivity is for Attitude. For example, with the aformentioned pride dates in different cities, the magazine is sharing this information with their audience, and they expect the audience to be sharing this information with their friends and online in order to raise awareness for something that they ideologically align with.
