BBC Films: TOO BIG or too small? Week 8

BBC Films is a British film production company that is part of the larger BBC Studios, which is a subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation. While BBC Films operates as a separate entity, it is not an independent studio, but rather a component of a much larger media conglomerate.BBC Films has been responsible for producing a wide range of films since its inception, from small-budget indie flicks to blockbuster hits. Because of its close ties to the BBC, BBC Films has access to some of the best writers, directors, and actors in the UK, which has helped it to establish a reputation for producing high-quality, critically acclaimed films.BBC Films has also been praised for its commitment to diversity and inclusivity in casting and storytelling, with a particular focus on underrepresented voices within the film industry. Overall, BBC Films continues to be a major player in the UK film industry, delivering a diverse range of quality films that resonate with audiences both domestically and internationally. Their commitment to inclusivity is evident in their support for emerging talents and willingness to take creative risks, resulting in powerful and thought-provoking films that challenge traditional narratives and perspectives. With a strong track record and a dedication to authentic storytelling, BBC Films is sure to remain an influential force in the industry for years to come.

Acting like and independent studio ensures it’s survival and the way BBC films acts like an independent studio because the products that they are making are very diverse and different from each other. They are trying to cater to everyone possible and the way they are able to do that is by producing a handful of unique films that everyone will enjoy. An example of this would be by looking at 2 films that BBC films has funded within its history; the Power of the Dog and Billy Elliot. Both films tackle very different genres, both have extremely different casts and both were received very differently by audiences. The Power of the Dog targeted to a worldwide audience because of its diverse cast and concept that everyone around the world understand. On the other hand, Billy Elliot targets to only a national audience because the subjects it tackles are only primarily understood by a U.K. audience. This is why no one from Uganda or Mexico would understand a boy who wants to ballet but would probably understand an old cowboy teaching a young cowboy about the western. Another reason why BBC films can be considered an Independent studio is because of the amount of Low Budget films It produces. The films normally have a budget of a few million which is nothing compared to other studios like Universal, MGM or Marvel. An example of this would be a large scale Blockbuster like Avengers Endgame which had a budget of around $200 million, whilst a BBC film like Nativity (2009) only had a budget of around $2.5 million. How these films get their budget also differentiates big and small budget films. A blockbuster film would be entirely funded by 1 studio, but a BBC film like I, Daniel Blake would have a bunch of small film studios, sometimes not even from the same countries, to help fund just one film.

On the other hand the BBC has traits that makes it act like a giant studio is because of the amount of money is draws in. BBC Films is part of the larger British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which is a publicly funded broadcaster in the United Kingdom. This affiliation with the BBC gives BBC Films a significant amount of resources and financial backing. With the backing of the BBC, BBC Films can afford to take risks on smaller, independent films that other studios may not be interested in producing. This financial backing also allows BBC Films to work with some of the top talent in the industry, from actors to directors and producers. This is why some of the films the have produced include some of the most notable actors from across the world such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Anthony Hopkins. The studio also goes for a quantity over quality way of working that is similar to a company like Marvel. However, the BBC have an excuse for doing this as all of their films are different and unique and they want to please their entire audience. This is not similar to a studio like Marvel who have a very specific audience but still choose to crank out many of the same films a year without and creative quality.

In conclusion, BBC films has both qualities and there is no obvious side of the fence on which it sits. There is definitely a lot more to argue on both sides, but they will probably all add up to the same amount. Curran and Seaton’s theory is somewhat correct when applied to BBC films as they are a huge studio controlling small projects, but those small projects are so unique and different to other small projects because they all have their own creative control.
