The 2010s have been a stiflingly important decade for black cinema, with films like 12 years a slave, Django unchained, i am not your negro, hidden figures, fruitvale station, moonlight, green book, and of course black panther. Due to Black Panther being a celebration of black culture, it was important to not only have a predominantly black cast, but a black director to push the films message to new heights. this was the same director of fruitvale station, a small indie film with a powerful message of police brutality.
pioneering films such as boyz n the hood, released in 1991,
films like 12 years a slave and moonlight winning best picture with a predominantly black cast not only showed how these films can stand with predominantly white cast films, but paved the way for a cultural icon such as Black Panther to release to such a warm welcome.
