Complex is an American New York -based media platform for youth culture which was founded as a bi-monthly magazine by fashion designer Marc Milecofsky. Complex reports on trends in style, pop culture and music with a focus on streetwear, hip hop, and graphic art.
Front cover - The front covers of Complex magazine are notably different to a conventional fashion magazine focused around popular trends and lifestyle. The front cover of Complex emulates their alternative urban style. One way they do this is through the lack of cover lines, they let the image do the talking and let the image alone portray the whole ideologies and feel of the magazine. The only copy on the cover is the big bold Masthead, the fashion designers name, "Selena Gomez" and "daydream" which is the theme of the magazine as a whole. The image of Selena herself emulates the Daydream theme as it is again unconventional to have a drawing instead of a photograph and the fact that her face is almost disappearing into nature adds to the daydream feel. As with every magazine celebrity influence is used in this cover in order to attract the target audience as it is a magazine focused around pop culture and music.
Audio visual - Complex has quite a large online presence especially on YouTube showing its modern priorities compared to some other magazines. On Complexes YouTube channel there are a vast amount of videos on "sneaker shopping with..." featuring a number of stylish celebs to attract the target audience. In this particular video we see Bella Hadid going shoe shopping. Bella Hadid is a well known supermodel who models for the majority of designer brands and so is associated with high end fashion. This mix of a high end supermodel with something more urban and street style shows how streetstyle is becoming more prestige but also how the magazine is for everyone. It also gives us a insight into celebrities lifestyle as Bella was able to just spend 1,000 dollars on trainers without even thinking twice which would appeal to a aspirer audience type.
