Conventions of a music video: Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

Nothing else matters is an example of a performance style video as it involves footage of studio rehearsals and reflects the lyrics in the video because they are about friendship and being together and the music video is made up of clips of them all together performing as well as in their personal lives. The video shows their development and shots of just the musical instruments as well as the story of them all growing as the song develops as they are clips of making the song and decisions on lyrics, this could also be seen as having a narrative point of view as it is a story. There is still a performance style feel to the video due to the direct address to the camera and as it was one of the earliest forms of music video it makes sense as it was released in 2009 and they had been together as a band since 1981. It would seem like exclusive access to the audience as the video is personal and would resonate with the audience wanting to be involved and feel important as well as reminiscing as it has the feel of a home movie. The song is slow and so works well in the old styled footage which is slow and simple yet effective in the way that it seems familiar to the audience and a reminder that people are more important than the music but they all work together as a makeshift family and have fun with it and don't let it get between them. There is not a part of the video that shows live performances because they are trying to show the audience the importance of the things before that and that to them , which is also shown in the lyrics, they need to show that they are not just a band together and need to celebrate each other; this also reflects their personal ideologies and the lyrics "Life is ours, we live it our way ,All these words I don't just say ,And nothing else matters, Trust I seek, and I find in you ,Every day for us something new ,Open mind for a different view" shows them as people more than celebrities going on a journey together and with the audience.
