David Gauntlett's pick and mix theory states that in the past we were given straight forward messages about how we should mold our identities but now there are a more diverse selections of stars and role models that we can pick and mix traits to construct our own personalities and character qualities zoella willingly portrays herself as one of these stars
for example Zoella makes a point of talking about mental health in her blogs and her own experiences with anxiety, the audience may take away character qualities such as openness and honesty this is through the audience being inspired to share their own experiences with mental health. This is also shown through her bubbly yet humble personality that she portrays in her vlogs were she chats to the audience like they are having a 1 on 1 conversation which can cause the audience to almost form a one way connection to the character that she portrays which allows her to have more of an influence over her audience and so her audience would instill these character traits into their own personalities
she also tries to show honesty about her business and the running of her YouTube channel for example when she got into hot water about selling a £50 advent callender that barely had £5 worth of gifts in it she tried to be straight forward and honest with her audience about why it was that price and how she can improve in the future.
In this video she goes into extreme detail about her upbringing and life before her social media career, this shows the audience that there are no barriers between her life and social media in a way she lays out her life and personality for the audience in which they get to see her life decisions and adapt how she see's life into the audiences way of thinking for example she says that she used YouTube too get over her issues with anxiety and others in the audience may do the same thing as it helped her in the past.
