Disney

Disney is arguably the largest and most well-known production company in the world, worth $150 billion. It was founded on 16th October, 1923 by the brothers Walt and Roy Disney. It's original name was the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio before changing its name to The Walt Disney Company in 1986.

Currently the company owns TV channels, theme parks, publishing, merchandising and music, however when it first started out it was just in the animation industry. The fact that Disney produces so many different forms of media is an example of how it fulfils Curran and Seaton's theory.

Curran and Seaton's Theory The idea that media is controlled by a small number of companies driven by the logic of profit and power. Also that media concentration generally limits or inhibits variety, creativity and quality. More socially diverse patterns of ownership help to create the conditions for more varied and adventurous media products.

The fact that Disney is such a large company can be a good thing, because it provides a lot of people with stable jobs and gives smaller companies the opportunity to be bought and for their work to be seen. However on the other hand, it can also be a negative as the media will become repetitive and this can be seen through the many Disney movies, where every storyline seems to be based on the same idea of a princess finding her true love.
